Every organisation has to be prepared for unexpected incidents and understands the need to provide appropriate care for those affected. More and more organisations are putting preventative measures in place to help mitigate the harmful effects of trauma and to be able to respond quickly and efficiently if an incident occurs. The costs and risks of being unprepared are considerable - the cost of being prepared is minimal.
Reactions to traumatic events vary considerably, ranging from relatively mild reactions, creating minor disruptions in a person’s life, to severe and debilitating problems. If the appropriate support is not provided, individuals can find ways to cope that are not helpful, such as withdrawing from colleagues, friends and family, or using drugs or alcohol.
